Several tanks of juvenile abalone and 100 grown ocean nursery giant clams were adopted by UC38 LLC for one year to support the care of invertebrate shells for the String of Pearls project aiming to restock protected reefs of the fast- disappearing threatened and locally-extinct species.
The adoption includes two (2) in-situ spawnings of the locally-extinct Philippines’ true native Tridacna gigas with potential to produce 5-10 million larvae and 3-months care for other giant clam species breeders at the hatchery.
Adopt-a-shell aims to raise funds for the String-of-Pearls project that cultures highly-exploited invertebrate marine species such as abalone, giant clam and trochus shells for return to reefs in effectively-managed marine protected areas where they belong.
